Stranger Now by Julian Hartwell

Track Description

Stranger Now is the sound of nostalgia, memory, longing, and remembrance of things past. This piece was composed after returning home from a long journey overseas, and the feeling of seeing home through new, expanded eyes, like a stranger in a strange land. A long, winding piano intro sets the stage for a sweet melody led by flugelhorn and soprano sax, that then builds and builds to a full emotive crescendo before a gentle restatement of the melody. A brief piano solo finds its way into the story before the melody comes back again with an even greater climax - a dramatic drum solo over a repeating two-bar ostinato figure from the horns. In the music i tried to express the feeling of longing and melancholy over sweet memories made in foreign lands, and the feeling of having expanded and experienced much once one is firmly returned to the land of one's origin. Featuring quintet of Piano, Upright Bass, Drums, Soprano Sax, Flugelhorn
