Purcell - Abelazer - Rondeau - 02:03

Movement 2: Rondeau from Henry Purcell’s incidental music for the Aphra Behn play ‘Abdelazer’ or ‘The Moor’s Revenge (Z 570), written in 1695. It is a famous and popular baroque era piece, made famous in modern times by Benjamin Britten when he used it for his ‘The Young Person’s Guide to the Orchestra’ composition. It has been used a lot in modern popular culture featuring in the film ‘Pride and Prejudice’ in a scene in the ballroom of a stately home. It has a stately, romantic and classy sound with a dark tone which is very cinematic. It is arranged here for chamber orchestra as follows: 3 x violin, 1 x viola, 1 x cello, 1 x double bass: contrabass and a harpsichord.
