Gamification – Application on Royalty Free Music

March 17, 2013 in Uncategorized

Gamifation is simply the process of applying game techniques in non game environments. Things common in games such as leaderborads, points, virtual currencies, awards and badges have always been considered as factors to increase user engagement and loyalty.

On the last update on our production music download platform, our team has decided to move one step forward and apply gamification based on 3 goals

  • increase customer loyalty
  • boost sales
  • gain back old customers

Gamification is not a “black hole”. It needs to be carefully examined and applied to each individual case needs. It also needs to find its optimal gaming level. Overgamifying a business can sometimes cause more problems than it solves.

So we picked up 2 game elements to apply on our royalty free music library.

1) Points and 2)  Badges

1) Points

Each user has a point score. Points are added to each account upon certain handpicked actions. Those actions include

  • purchase of royalty free music
  • logins / day
  • tweeting about us
  • sharing on facebook about us
  • giving us feedback

We also took into account all past users actions, before our gamification implementation – meaning simply that all past user behavior has not been left apart. A client that has spent i.e 1000USD from 2005 till now, will see all accrued points from his past engagement and receive his bonus from day one.

2) Badges

Each point level unlocks badges. Some badges are only discount levels (5%, 10%, 20%). Some other actions unlock premium badges such as “free music supervisor”. Other badges are also “status only” oriented.

Gamification is an on going process. It can be applied to anything, anywhere as it is built based on a basic human instinct: reward.

Colour Of The Year 2013: And The Winner Is…

February 27, 2013 in Web Design

To the majority of people, the term “Pantone 17-5641 Emerald” will be a mystery. It may sound like the name of a distant planet from a Star Wars film, but the Pantone 17-5641 Emerald is 2013’s colour of the year.

Pantone are a company that have huge influence. After starting out as a printing company in the 1950’s, the New Jersey company are now more famous for PMS (Pantone Matching System), which is a branded colour space used in industries such as printing, paint, fabric, and plastics.

Untitled-1

Since 2000, Pantone have hosted a secret meeting in a major city in Europe to find a ‘Colour of the Year’. Along with representatives from various nations’ colour standards groups, they get together and fight it out over two days of presentations and debates to find a colour that is in keeping with the mood of the times. For example, last year’s colour Tangerine Tango, was chosen because it “provided the energy boost we needed to recharge and move forward” (Pantone’s words).

The decision – and the subsequent colour – can quickly have a wide-reaching effect on many industries, including fashion, graphic design and florists.

A Wide Ranging Influence

It may seem bizarre that a decision on what is deemed the colour of the year by one corporation and some of their influential friends would have such a wide-ranging effect on decisions made in so many industries, but top fashion designers such as Tommy Hilfiger and Ella Moss have all taken Pantone’s decision as gospel and honed their seasons designs accordingly. You can also see it on everything from iPhone cases to office furniture.

The chosen colour of the year candidate will also make a difference to how people decorate their home, as interior designers and companies produce ranges of paint and furniture to suit the trends, and when Pantone are essentially setting the trends for that year, the chances are that there will be a lot of Emerald colours on the walls of many homes.

Pantone’s 17-5641 Emerald is a stunning green, and as Emerald’s are most associated with gemstones and riches, it is a very luxurious colour. According to Pantone, many countries have chosen green to represent healing and unity for centuries. They certainly know how to sell a colour.

The Implications to Graphic Design

In the fashion world, and the offline world in general, the Emerald colour is certain to dazzle and impress. But what are the implications of the colour to the world of graphic design? Colour is very important to the online world, as it is often this that makes a website or design stand out, as well as the functionality of the site.

With a colour as crisp and elegant as Emerald, it will definitely find a place in the graphic design world, especially where there needs to be a mixture of white and green. It gives everything a sophisticated look. Green is a very popular colour in graphic design as it is associated with nature, which in turn has a positive effect on those who come into contact with the colour.

Who knows how the colour that seduced Pantone and their friends into making it colour of the year came about? Was it spotted on car, at an art gallery or a perhaps even a flower? It is a mystery for now, but one thing is for sure though: It has earned its crown this year.

Sophie works alongside brand design agency Amplitude. Green has long been her favourite colour so she is glad to see it in the spotlight this year!

10 most profitable media companies

February 26, 2013 in Music Industry

big-media_450 (1)

The industry of television, film and journalism is quite profitable. Some companies, however, don’t make the bulk of their revenue from news and entertainment content, but from separate and unrelated holdings.

For example, the Washington Post Company is home to the nation’s 5th largest newspaper, but it has become a $4.7 billion company thanks in part to its possession Kaplan Inc., the world’s largest education company. Kaplan’s history isn’t a bed of roses – it was sued on multiple occasions for fraudulent business practices, including false advertisement – but its success helps the company bring in a $278 million profit.

Gannett, the nation’s 9th largest media company, earns the big bucks by focusing on television and journalism. Its “USA Today” is the top-selling newspaper in the nation, and the company’s 85 newspapers have more than 7.2 million subscribers. Like Kaplan, Gannett has been sued multiple times; the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission has cited the company for discriminatory hiring practices.

Get your music licensed

April 25, 2012 in Uncategorized

Ok, now you have you new record ready for the masses. At the same time you discover that you have also produced some great tracks on the past, which are kept safe on hard disks. Your fans friends, family are eager to listen to all your great stuff and wait for your official release!

BUT is that all?

Did you know that music apart from entertainment is also essential for creating emotions inside various productions?

In the modern music industry, a new distribution channel that could boost your awareness and also be a significant income is “licensing” your music to all creative people out there that produce videos, adverts, podcasts, websites, video game and need great music to enhance the impact of their works.

Imagine one of your tracks as background in a YouTube video that ends up having thousands or even millions of views. The video producer in order to legally use your music and upload the video with your tracks as background should have purchased the right to do it. This is called: Synchronization license. You, apart from being paid for licensing your music to the producer are now exposed through your music to all these people watching this video.

Now multiply the above scenario with more than one YouTube videos, Podcasts, Advertisements etc. Your presence in all these productions could generate income and also raise your popularity.

But how a producer could actually find your music in order to proceed to licensing it?
Because of this new trend a new market has grown called “royalty free music”. Composers can upload their music in royalty free music platforms where thousands of producers are visiting in daily basis in order to find what fits best for their productions. With very attractive prices such as 40 $ for use in websites or YouTube and 150 $ for use in adverts or documentaries (non exclusively , the same track can be licensed several times during a day , — ok this is the best scenario but it already happens for many composers) marketplaces selling royalty free music (or stock music) are increasingly popular.

Royalty Free Music Library www.themusicase.com is one of the leading platforms worldwide for stock music licensing to producers across the globe. All music is handpicked (is uploaded after approval) and you can learn more here
